Academy eel

Body elongate, cylindrical, pointed at both ends, entirely finless; head and trunk a little shorter than tail; snout pointed (more so in side view than in A. kendalli), conical, overhanging, underside flattened and grooved; eye small, above tip of lower jaw; front nostril tubular, rear one an oval pore on top lip edge under eye; gill openings below, converging forward; teeth pointed, in single rows on jaws; 27-36 upper and 28-35 lower jaw teeth; 3-4 teeth on vomer;  pores on top of head 5, and on preoperculum 4 (occasionally 3); lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head; lateral line pores before anus 53-58.

Pale flesh color to tan; a fine sprinkling of dark dots on upper head and body; a large pale area down and back from eye and a series of pale areas along lower jaw; lateral line canal visible as a pale stripe.

Reaches 42 cm.

Sandy bottoms.

Depth range: 0-38 m.

N Carolina to Brazil.
