Aprognathodon platyventris Bohlke, 1967

Striped eel

Body moderately elongate; tail ~1/3 TL; head laterally compressed; skin of head and underside of snout smooth; snout overhanging, no central groove underneath; front nostril tubular, thick, prominent; rear nostril opens in mouth; top jaw 3-8 teeth, lower jaw 8-18; no teeth at center of top jaws; central roof of mouth with 1 row of 4-7 teeth; gill openings low, angled down and forwards, space between them on underside less that length of opening; no pectoral fins; dorsal and anal fins low, but distinct; dorsal fin begins on head and ends shortly before tail tip; no tail fin; lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.

Pale, with 3 dark stripes: a broad one along midside from end of head to tail tip, a narrow one along outer edge of dorsal fin, a narrow one along each belly ridge, that degrades to a line of spots behind anus.

Reaches 46 cm.

Shallow sand and seagrass beds.

Depth: 0-17 m.

The Bahamas to Panama.
