Body robust; head large and thick; snout short, square; head and trunk 41-50% of TL; jaws not arched, mouth completely closable; both nostrils tubular, rear one over front edge of eye; jaw teeth slender, conical, in single row on each jaw; dorsal origin on head, before gill opening; gill opening a small slit on mid- side.
Brown with an orange tint; inside mouth orange; body and fins with many large dark blotches (orange brown at front, blackish at rear) separated by a network of pale lines; gill opening in a large black blotch.
Reaches 186 cm.
Reefs.
Depth range: 0-100 m, adults usually below 30 m.
Primarily an E Atlantic species; N Carolina to the S Caribbean.
