Body elongate, compressed at rear; head and trunk shorter than to slightly >1/2 TL; tail tapering; snout moderate and blunt; mouth short; eye over middle of mouth; front nostril a simple tube; rear nostril a hole, at level of profile of head; lower jaw straight, mouth closes completely; teeth large, triangular, compressed; serrated on rear edge and usually at the front; top front of mouth with 2 rows of 5-6 large teeth, then 8-15 main jaw teeth, sometimes with an inner row of 2-3 long, slender depressible teeth, 1 (0-2) large fangs at front of mouth behind the outer series of teeth; back of roof of mouth with 8-19 teeth, in 1-2 rows at front; lower jaw with 13-18 large outer teeth and 1-9 tiny teeth inside those at front ; gill opening round; dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but evident; dorsal origin on head, before gill opening; 4 pores along top jaw.
Brown, with a pattern of clusters of pale branching lines that tend to be arranged in vertical rows on body; pale lines on head smaller, more irregular and denser; fins as body, but with pale outer edges.
Reaches 34 cm.
Lives on unconsolidated bottoms.
Depth range: 59-183 m.
N Carolina to Colombia.
