Chestnut Moray

Body stout; head and trunk 40-45% of TL; head slender; snout long and narrow; eye large, at about middle of mouth; front nostril a simple tube, rear nostril large, elongate, above front edge of eye; jaws slender, narrow, strongly arched and meeting only at tips, fangs visible when jaws are closed; lower jaw projects a little; teeth conical sharp, upper jaws with outer row of small teeth and inner row of 4-7 depressible large fangs; between front jaws with outer ring of small teeth and a central row of 3-5 large fangs; rear of roof of mouth with a short single row of small teeth; lower jaw with inner row of 6-13 large teeth and outer row of small teeth along its length; dorsal and anal fins very evident, dorsal origin over or a little behind gill opening.

Uniform dark brown; pores along top and lower jaws in pale spots; iris yellow.

Reaches 33.5 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 1-65 m.

Bermuda to Brazil and the Central and E Atlantic.
