Ridged Eel
Elongate, worm-like, strongly compressed near tail; body and tail about same length; head conical, tapering, with pointed overhanging snout, upper jaw projects beyond lower; eye small; teeth small, conical, 1-2 rows on jaws, those in center of top jaws joining the strip down the center of the roof of the mouth; nostrils non-tubular, rear one a little in front of middle of eye; pectoral present, small, behind top of vertical, lateral gill opening; dorsal begins a little before anus; median fins continuous, low, fleshy, confluent with well developed tail fin; lateral line on body to level of anus, only pores on head are on lower jaw.
Brown, sometimes with dark reticulations; pores on lower jaw sometimes surrounded by white areas.
Reaches 30 cm.
Burrows in soft mud bottoms.
Depth range: 1-265 m.
The Gulf of Mexico to central Brazil.
