Urobatis jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1816)

Yellow stingray

Rays with an oval or almost circular disc; pectorals completely continuous with sides of head; snout rounded; eyes and spiracle on top of head, nostrils (with a curtain between them an mouth), mouth and gill slits on underside; floor of mouth with fleshy papillae; jaw teeth are small, numerous, in bands; tail slender, tapering, its length < length of disc, with a large venomous spine; tail fin with dorsal and ventral fin lobes joined around end of tail, top lobe relatively high (height ~1/4  length); no dorsal fin; skin on upper surface smooth.

Upper surface tan to brown, with numerous gold, green and white spots and mottling, often in a weblike or worm-line pattern; underside yellowish, greenish, or brownish white; tail with dark spots.

Reaches 70 cm TL.

Lives on sand, mud, seagrass and coral bottoms and in bays and estuaries.

Depth range 1-160 m, usually nearshore.

From North Carolina to northern South America.
