Southern Eagle Ray
Disc rhomboidal, wider than long, with broadly rounded outer tips; snout short and blunt; pectorals bluntly pointed, concave at rear, continue onto rostrum; head broad, short, projecting well before disc; eyes and spiracles on side of head; mouth with fleshy papillae on its floor; teeth in flat, pavement-like plates, with 7 series of plates, central row is largest; distance between 5th gill slits > than distance between inner edges of nostrils; tail slender, about as long as disc, no tail fin; 1-2 large spines at base, after small dorsal fin; length of base of dorsal fin 62-77% of distance between exposed nostrils; origin of dorsal fin well behind rear tips of pelvic fin.
Upper surface grey-brown to chocolate brown; lower surface brownish white with dark outer margins.
Reaches 99 cm disc width; size at birth is 25 cm.
Bottom living on shallow inshore waters, mainly in estuaries.
Depth range: 0-181 m.
The central US to southern Florida; Argentina.
