Bluntnose Stingray

Disc rhomboidal, about as wide as long, angular at front, outer corners broadly rounded; snout short, bluntly angular, not protruding beyond front margin of disc, its length < distance between spiracles; pelvic fins not or only slightly projecting behind disc; nostrils with a large fringed curtain between them and the mouth; floor of the mouth has fleshy papillae; teeth with low oval or angular crowns; tail long and slender, ending in a point; tail base broad, depressed; 1 large, serrated, venomous spine on top of tail; no tail fin or dorsal fins, but tail with small dorsal keel behind the spine and a ventral fleshy ridge, height of the ventral ridge slightly > than height of the tail above it; a row of relatively small thorns along the midline of the back from the nape to the tail base, plus 1-2 thorns on each shoulder; no thorns or tubercles on sides of tail.

Upper surface grey-brown, olive brown to reddish, occasionally with bluish spots; lower surface white.

Reaches 78 cm disc width.

Benthic on sandy bottoms.

Depth range: 0-20 m.
