Rhomboidal disc with concave front margins; snout moderately elongate, its tip firm, with a stout cartilage; front edge of disc concave; front of pectoral distinctly separate from snout; eyes on top of head, with spiracles immediately behind; nostrils a little in front of mouth, with front lobes from nostrils forming a curtain between them and mouth; 2 small dorsal fins at rear of tail, distance between them about equal to base of  the 1st dorsal; pelvic fin with 2 distinct lobes connected by membrane, rear one larger; tail fin is a fold behind the second dorsal; top of disc largely free of denticles, present on rear borders of ventral side; no thorns on center of disc, 3 rows of thorns along tail, those thorns not with compressed, hooked tips, center row with 13-26 thorns, 3-6 thorns between dorsal fins.

Upper surface dark brown, with many small dark spots; lower surface grey to black, with mucous pores darkly pigmented.

Reaches 65 cm.

Depth range: 55-384 m.
