Atlantic Guitarfish

Body and tail shark-like; snout long, pointed, with 2 central cartilaginous ridges, producing an elongate triangular disc; disc longer than wide; snout tip expanded and flattened, with a few large conical tubercles (except in juveniles); a large spiracle immediately behind each eye; gill openings on underside; nostrils large, their length 1.4 X distance between them and ~3/4 width of mouth; 2 equal-sized dorsal fins, the first behind the pelvics; one row of thorns along back; well developed tail fin that lacks a lower lob

Upper surface ash grey to chocolate brown; numerous small white spots over most of the upper surface (sometimes lacking) lower surface pale yellowish.

Reaches 76 cm.

Lives in sandy areas, beaches and estuaries.

Depth: 0-30 m.

North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico.
