Bluefin driftfish
Body elongate, (juveniles deeper bodied) compressed, soft, flabby; snout blunt; eye moderate, with a fatty ring around it; operculum thin, with 2 short spines; mouth small, at front; top jaw teeth small, conical, in 1 row, wide spaced; adult lower jaw with long knife-like teeth, close-set; teeth on front and sides of roof of mouth, and base of gill arches, none on tongue; 2 scarcely separate dorsal fins, XI-XII + I, 27-32, spines shorter than rays, its origin before, or, in large specimens, over pectoral origin; anal fin II weak spines, 28-34; pectoral fins with oblique bases, short (lengthens with age), rounded, 18-20 rays; pelvic fins originate under pectoral base, attached to the abdomen, fold into a groove; tail fin forked, rounded tips; branched mucous canal system under thin skin along midline of flank; scales very small, 115-125 on lateral line, cover bases of median fins, on top of head in a narrow band, reach only to between eyes; lateral line high on body.
Adult: dark brown to purplish-black, dark blue eye, bases of median fins translucent; juvenile: translucent, with irregular brown spotting, dark 1st dorsal fin.
Size: 80 cm.
Habitat: oceanic, young around jellyfishes.
Depth: 0-1000 m.
Circumtropical; New York to the Gulf of Mexico.
