Species description based on Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza (1989). A small glass frog (males to 23 mm, females to 24 mm).

Ventral

The ventral surface is transparent; the heart, liver and digestive tract are white.

Distinguishing characteristics

The bones are white in this species of glassfrog.

Eye

The iris is yellow with brown spots. The spotting is generally more dense near the pupil than along the edges.

Life history

Breeding season

Breeding occurs at least in July and August (Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza 1989). Males call from vegetation above fast-moving streams (Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza 1989).

Egg

Eggs are deposited on vegetation in clutches of up to 35 eggs (Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza 1989). The eggs are green and encased in a gelatinous mass (Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza 1989).

Males were observed remaining near clutches or sitting on top of them, and thus, may guard them (Barrera and Ruiz-Carranza 1989).
