Red-striped wrasse

Elongate, compressed; 1 pair of enlarged canines at front of upper and lower jaws; no large canine at rear of top jaw; dorsal fin IX, 12; anal rays III, 12; pectoral rays 14; lateral line unbroken, but abruptly bent down under rear of dorsal fin, its tubes branched, except those on tail base; lateral line with 27 pored scales.

IP: white with 2 salmon colored stripes - 1 from snout, through the eye to end of caudal peduncle, a narrower one along the mid-dorsal line, from head to tail base; 2 prominent black spots, one at the operculum, the other on the tail base; fins mainly clear; juveniles have a similar color, but with a black and white ocellus on the middle of the dorsal fin. TP: upper half olive, an indistinct darker stripe along mid-flank; cheeks yellow behind eye, with dark blotch on rear of operculum; iris red; tail orange, with outer 1/3 charcoal.

Size: 12 cm.

Habitat: rubble and sand.

Depth: 5-35 m.

Endemic to Isla del Coco.
