Welcome to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Herbarium (SCZ) web site.
This web site is based on the many years of effort and dedication to the advancement of botany in Panama by Prof. Mireya Correa and the rest of the STRI's Herbarium staff.
This site provides access to the STRI herbarium (properly known as the Summit Herbarium (SCZ)) specimen collection database and the catalog of species names. In addition, the University of Panama Herbarium (PMA) has graciously permitted us access to their collection's database. The PMA database is currently only partially available. The entire PMA collections database will be available soon.
This site also provides access to other STRI botantical databases including: Digital images of plants and pollen, CTFS census data, Phenology summaries, and associated Reared insects.
One of the most important recent achievments of the herbarium has been the publication, in 2004, of the Catalog of the Vascular Plants of Panama; a volume of 600 pages and authored by STRI staff scientist Mireya Correa along with Herbarium staff members Carmen Galdames and María Stapf. This new volume has added more than 1,000 additional species to the last published review of the Flora of Panama (D'Arcy, W.G., 1987, Flora of Panama : checklist and index). including, for the first time, the ferns of Panama. This web site provides access to the most recent updates to the catalog.
For more information about this important work, including how to order a copy, click here. The Flora of Panama database used in this website includes all corrections and additions (as of Aug. 28, 2006) to the Catalog since its publication.
