Jarocho Goby

Elongate; head compressed; mouth U-shaped, a little under snout; top lip not fused to snout, a groove present between upper lip and snout; tongue truncate; teeth in upper and lower jaws conical in 1-2 rows; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII + I, 10-11; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-10; pectoral fins 15-17; pelvic fins I ,5, disk complete; tail rounded; no scales; no lateral line.

Translucent dark bluish-grey; snout with central yellow bar; a bright yellow stripe along each side of body in 2 distinct sections: front section from just before eye, through top of eye, ending slightly behind eye, rear section from upper tail base onto tail fin itself; a dark grey broad stripe from snout through eye to tail base; body on bottom translucent white; fins translucent.

Reaches: 3.5 cm.

Habitat: Found in aggregations of 12-60 fish swimming in water column close to the reef, in high profile areas and overhangs.

Depth 3-25 m.

SW Gulf of Mexico.
