Dwarf Pipefish

Body stout, squarish in cross section; snout with ridge along side, moderately long [42% (26-45%) of head length] and deep (25-71% of its length); operculum with longitudinal ridge angled up towards gill opening; dorsal 19-21 rays; anal 2-4 rays; pectoral 11 (10-13) rays; no pelvic fins; tail 10 rays; upper trunk and tail ridges not joined; ridge on flank of body straight, ends near anus; lower trunk and tail ridges joined; main body ridges sometimes with spines at end of rings; usually with skin flaps; 0-2 trunk rings under dorsal fin; tail rings 31-35; trunk rings 16-18; body with skin flaps; brood pouch under tail rings 12-20, with well developed plates.

Pale brown, without distinctive markings.

Reaches 10 cm.

Lives in coral, rock and sand habitats.

Depth range: 4-73 m.

N Carolina to the NE Gulf of Mexico; northerrn Cuba.
