Since it was published in 1978, The Flora of Barro Colorado Island by Thomas Croat (Stanford University Press, ISBN 0-8047-0950-5) has served as an essential reference for thousands of researchers, students and technicians working BCI and around the area of the Panama Canal Zone, and has been cited in hundreds of scientific publications. While much has been learned about the flora of BCI in the 30 years since its publication, Flora of Barro Colorado continues to be a valuable reference book for many. It is because of the importance that this book has, and will continue to have for many years to come, that this web site has been created.
This web site is designed to provide easy access to the book’s entire contents through simple to use search bars and drop-down menus. You may search for species names as they appear in the Flora of Barro Colorado, or as they are currently recognized by the National Herbarium of Panama. The web site allows the user to read either text-converted versions or high-resolution scanned images of the book
This site is still a work in progress. This site will eventually permit text searching so that you can search for information within the species descriptions themselves. We also plan on making the keys more inteactive and dynamic than they are at this moment. If you have any comments please send them to Steve Paton.
We would like to thank the Atherton Seidell Endowment Fund of the Smithsonian Institution for providing the financial support necessary for the digitization of this book and for the creation of this web site. We would also like to specially thank Thomas Croat and the Stanford University Press (www.sup.org) for kindly providing permission to use the contents of this website.
